Various conferences to attract investors towards the avenues neglected either due to law and order situation or broken infrastructure in past. A conference with the same domain and theme by Mehdi Shah's government at Lahore and Skardu, though the lethargic role of department of tourism to get this sector that undergone a decline for last few years and inability to convert the industry into a sustainable market has served a change of perception among the investors. And for this Mehdi Shah's government should be given a due credit for his personal efforts to overwhelm crisis in the aforementioned sector which is considered as one of the major actor of the regional economy that absorb a large number of manpower, brings revenue and strengthen image of an area that remained in isolation until the end of sixties and development in this sector ultimately benefits the indigenous middle class population. Apart from law and order situation, bureaucratic red tap, non-cooperative and irresponsible behavior of works and power department Gilgit Baltistan has given possibility of investments a lethal blow. Tyrannically, no one at the top of these are ready here to take responsibility whose inappropriate planning and approaches gave them personally more benefits than the industry in question its self.
Few of the highest mountains , alluring valleys, deepest river gorges, eighth wonder on earth, rich cultural heritage and low crime rate are the major attributes of the Gilgit-Baltistan region towards which both the concerned government ministry in Islamabad, its subsidiary organ (department of ministry and tourism) as well as private sector dealing in the provision of the same services.
Despite of allegations by international monitoring agencies over the major kick backs and corruption at different levels among the ministers and central leadership, PPP's regional government has the honor for introducing millstone changes including Self Governance Reform ordinance, 2009, though the fruits of it could not still passed on the regional development in real terms due to constant incroachment of one department into another, patronization of the activists of a single party, hegmony of narrow sighted officials at the top of government mechinery. Here, we would like advice Mehdi Shah's government to convince federal government to redesign policies over tourism and hotle industry, reconstitute existing structure in the regional concerned department, create a new institution comprising experts aims to take remdies to patronize and consolidate this dying sector on which fate of a majority segment of population rely.
