Wazir to get additional charges; speaker to look after the GB as acting governor

GILGIT, September 16: According to the media sources, Wazir Baig, Speaker Gilgit Baltisan Legisltive Assembly (GBLA) would assume additional charge of acting governor for the region till the appointment of any other person for governorship. Under the Self Governance and empowerment order, 2009 speaker is authorized to look after affairs of the office in case of absence of death of the working governor. GBLA sources told Voice of Hunza that the acting governor is expected to take oath by the end of third week of December.
Waqar Salim, a reknown regional analyst, while talking to VoH said that the new situation would pose to the speaker additional burden for he already has to tackle major issues in the capacity of speaker as well as member of Hunza vicinity.

HUNZA, September 15: Manzoor eleven won final match of defense day commemorating smash tournament held on September 14, 2010. In the best of five, Manzoor eleven entitled the victory by 3 sets after an exciting match. The smash event coupled with a marathon race of three four kilometers was started in afternoon. Winner and runner up teams' players presented with dance over local traditional tunes.
Rani Attiqa Ghazanfar Ali Khan who was chief guest in the final event gave away medals and trophies to the prominent players and the teams on board. Seaking at the moment, Rani Ghazanfar said that arrangment of recreational events are necessary to engage our educated youth in healthy activities. She praised the manner and the discipline maintained by amateurs and particapants of the games. She called on the people present at the moment to help affectees saying rest of country suffered a huge disaster including various areas of Gilgit-Baltistan and this may divert attention of government towards Attaabad land slide affectees. She announced Rs. 10,000 cash as contribution for KCSC and Rs.1,000 for each team. GB Governor Shama Khalid passes awayVoH Monitoring Desk
GILGIT, September 15: (APP) The first woman governor of Gilgit-Baltistan, Dr Shama Khalid, passed away in Islamabad on Wednesday. The announcement of her demise was made by the Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira during a press conference in Islamabad. Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly Speaker Wazir Baig would be the acting governor of the region after the demise of Dr Shama and until the appointment of the new governor. The people belonging to all segments of society also expressed their heartfelt sorrow over the death of Dr Shama Khalid, the first lady governor of GB. President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer also expressed profound grief over the death. Dr Shama Khalid died at the age of 60 on Wednesday after succumbing to cancer.Dr Khalid was sworn in as the first governor of the region on March 23, 2010. She was also the first woman governor of Pakistan.
