Monetary Fund (IMF) so far, at an interest rate of four percent under the standby arrangement signed with it in November 2008, Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen informed the Senate on Tuesday. Responding to questions from members of the Upper House, he said under the agreement, the IMF has agreed to provide an amount of $7.6 million, which would be disbursed in seven installments over a period of 23 months. Economic Affairs Ministry informed the Senate through a written reply that from March 25, 2008 to November 30, 2009, the present government had received and disbursed foreign loans amounting to $6,695.9 million – out of which $756.9 million were grants.In a written reply, Ministry of Commerce and Trade informed the Upper House that Pakistan earned $3785.107 million through trade with the United States, $56.001 million in trade with Chile, and $1.552 million trading with Germany during fiscal year 2008-09. Afghanistan, Richard Holbrooke arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday on a three-day visit to strengthen Pak-US relations, improve cooperation in the war on terror and remove misunderstandings on contentious issues. He will begin by first meeting Foreign Secretary Noman Bashir to discuss the upcoming fourth round of the strategic dialogue. During his stay in Islamabad, Holbrooke will also meet President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. 11 killed in fresh Karachi violence

ncluding activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), two women and a child, were gunned down. The Lyari is still tense. According to police, the firing incidents occurred in Usmanabad, Dhobighat and Hasan Lashkari Village, where eight people including a girl were killed. Also, 12 people were injured in the incident who were rushed to the Civil Hospital. On Thursday morning, the police recovered the body of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) activist, Mohammed Amir alias Anda, from Mirza Adam Khan Road. The police said that his head had been severed. The killing sparked a spate of violence in Lyari and Liaquatabad, claiming the lives of nine other people. These included PPP activist and chairman of All Karachi NGOs Alliance, Nadir Baloch, who was shot dead near Gutter Baghicha in Pak Colony. Unidentified armed men ransacked a police picket in Pak Colony, while a police mobile was also attacked in the same area. Enraged supporters of the PPP, meanwhile, took the bodies of seven residents of Lyari to the Chief Minister House as part of their protest against ‘targeted killings’ of party workers andsupporters. In other developments, the core committee meeting of the PPP and the MQM was deferred indefinitely. In Orangi Town area, unidentified armed men gunned down 35-year Mustahsan Zaidi, who was activist of a political party, The Post reported.VoH Watch
Malik also claimed that there are no similarities between the situation in Karachi and Swat. Speaking outside the NAB court in Karachi, Malik said that the police force in the city was to be increased and new people were being recruited. He said that the government will have a strict no-tolerance policy for target killing incidents.
