Addressing disasters

Every one of us is sad for the huge loss of human lives in recent disaster in Attaabad and Sarat or Aeenabad village. Sometimes negligence to take safety measures brings greater loss than perceived before something going worse. The population on settlement was warned by both non-government organization and public survey organizations to move to the safer places to escape any calamity without any relief and support to facilitate in process. The masses knocked the doors of those on helm of power and begged possible support to rehabilitate affectees for many times. Neither Niether government authorities nor national media ever tried to visit the area and highlight issue to gain attention. Yet, influx of channels and media persons can be seen to win the race when tragedy occurred, to show bared corpse of human beings to dazzle the audience. Vow, what a norm of journalism prevails in the country. Though media cries a lot on press freedom, yet, it did not ever ponder to know its weaknesses. One thing was clear: our media largely believe on beneficial gains rather to highlight the interest of common masses. The disaster will be recollected by many for it claimed highest lives ever in the History of Hunza after the tragedy of Chipurson valley when ten people suffered tragic death in an avalanche few years ago. Those all deceased will live in our memories for many decades as they provided with us a remarkable example of love of homeland and preferred death on migration. From students to professionals all are busy in rescue work to share the grief.
The general response of elected members of Legislative assembly was bit disappointing for they preferred political activities on disaster as Chief Minister and his cabinet members hardly spare time to visit and pay some words of relief to the affectees of the village. Similarly, civil administration seemed rather pathetic due to lack of advanced technology and equipments to save many lives and remained confined to warn people. Yet, President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari has expressed his deep sorrow on loss of precious lives and property and directed concerned authorities to give maximum relief to disaster hit people. Similarly the acting governor Qamar Zaman Kaira has distributed cheques of Rs. 500,000 to deceased and 100,000 rupee each injured individual in his recent visit to disaster hit area. He also pleged to compensate the population through rehibilitation plan. It is the time to realize our deficiencies and get prepare to tackle any disaster in taking safety measures and prioritizing issues according to their status in future . A special fund can be proposed to central government to utilize in such emergency based situation to ensure aid to deserved people in the region. This will benefit both the masses and authorities to tackle issues that later turns fatal.
