Dec.24: According to a regional portal, sghar and Ejaz Rumi, two young peace activists belonging to the Gojal Valley of Hunza – Nagar district, have reached Karachi today. They walked for peace through Gilgit – Baltistan, NWFP, Islamabad, Punjab and Sindh, covering over 2, 012 kilometers (1250 miles) of distance in a span of 76 days, havinvg started at the 16600 feet high Khunjrav National Park, located at Pak – China border. They will be received by the government of Sindh and different Karachi based organizations of Gilgit – Baltistan tomorrow at Mazar-e-Quaid. The peace walkers placed two stones picked from the Khunjrav National Park at Mazar of Pakistan’s founder, as a token of remembrance.They covered 2012 KMs of distance, having started at the 16600 feet high Khunjrav National Park, located in Gojal Valley. High dignitaries of the government are expected to be present during the ceremony. The Khunjrav – Karachi Peace Walk ended yesterday at the Mazar-e-Quaid. The ending ceremony was attended by hundreds of residents of Gilgit – Baltistan living in Karachi, representatives of civil society and the leaders of Pakistan People Party, including deputy speaker of Sindh Assembly, Shehla Raza, Rashid Rabbani, Waqar Mehdi and Saeed Ghani. Representatives of different regional organizations and local elders also attended the ending ceremony in large numbers.Speaking at the occasion Shehla Raza said that the courageous move of the two youngsters belonging to GB reflects willingness of the youth of Pakistan to promote and practice peace. (APP) Syed Mehdi Shah, Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan has said that the appointment of new governor is likely December, 2009.He said that people of the region have given our party a chance to address their issues through heavy mandate during recent poles. He claimed that, the newly appointed governor would be from Gilgit-Baltistan. He said that Jamiat-e-ullemai Islam (F) is the ally of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) adding the party has had good relation ship with other parties even in hard times. " Despite the largest party PPP will form coalition government", he added. He was talking to journalists along with Chaudhary Manzoor Ahmed, incharge election Gilgit-Balatistan at Peoples secreteriat Islamabad. He claimed that PPP gives its workers honour. GILGIT, Dec. 21: (Shamsuddin Muhammad) According to a regional Urdu daily, Local administration Gilgit-Baltistan has imposed Sanction-144 in Gilgit-Baltistan region to avoid any mishap during holy month of Muharram and prohibited dual ride on bikes in the limits of the both cities in effect December 20 to next twenty days. The health ministry has established emergency control room in major hospitals and blood banks to handle the situation effectively in the region. A meeting presided by secretary health doctor Sohail Saqlain held in which special teams were constituted to remain alert 24 hours during the first ten days of the holy month.(Daily K2-Urdu)

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani n Saturday said Pakistan Peoples Party's government has a history f carrying forward the agenda of people service, and hoped this ould remain the cornerstone of the party's future policies in ilgit-Baltistan. Talking to Syed Mehdi Shah, Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan at PM House, the Prime minister congratulated him on assuming the office and hoped that under his able leadership the people of Gilgit-Baltistan would witness a new era of development and prosperity. He said the unanimous election of PPP candidates in Gilgit- Baltistan is a reflection of the government's firm commitment towards political reconciliation and politics of consensus. He said the trust reposed by the people of the area on PPP's leadership reflects the popularity of the party. He asked the newly elected Chief Minister to give priority to people's welfare while formulating and implementing development projects in all parts of Gilgit-Baltistan. Syed Mehdi Shah thanked the government for providing unprecedented development funds for Gilgit-Baltistan and said this record allocation would usher in a new era of development and public welfare in the hitherto underdeveloped part of the country. He thanked the Prime Minister for his personal interest in the development of the area and said he would do his utmost to come up to the confidence reposed in him, associated press of Pakistan reports.

The Punjab government ahs issued a notification enhancing the quota of seats in educational institutions of the province for the students of Gilgit-Baltistan.During the election campaign, the chief minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif and former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif had made certain announcements at Skardu, Gilgit, Gahkuch, Hunza, and Chilas. One of the announcements was about the reserved quota seats for Gilgit Baltistan in medical, dental colleges, agricultural universities and pharmaceutical universities of Punjab. The notification has been issued from Chief Minister Secretariat of Pun jab dated 6-11-2009 in which the Punjab, Secretary Agricultural, Chairman TEVTA and Chief Secretaryhave been advised to implement the decision and send compliance report to chief minister's secretariat. However, up to date no notification/information from these institutions and govt of Punjab has been received by education directorate of Gilgit Baltistan. Now the public of Gilgit Baltistan and nominees are eagerly waiting for the same, as classes have been started in medical colleges of Punjab from today, weekly baang reports.
